Kadife is the Turkish word for velvet (“catifea”, în Romanian – you see, our peoples were very close, some centuries ago…). It is also a nickname for my daughter.

„Acolo unde ieşeai pe uşa din spate a casei ăleia era odată o copaie de apă din piatră care zăcea în buruienile de pe o latură a casei. O ţeavă galvanizată cobora de pe acoperiş şi copaia era mai tot timpul plină şi îmi amintesc că m-am oprit odată acolo, m-am ghemuit, m-am uitat la copaie şi am început să mă gândesc la ea. Nu ştiu de cât timp stătea acolo. De o sută de ani. De două sute. Se putea vedea urmele de daltă pe piatră. Era tăiată dintr-o stâncă solidă, era lungă de vreo doi metri, lată de vreo juma’ de metru şi cam tot atît de adâncă. Cioplită pur şi simplu în piatră. Şi am început să mă gîndesc la omul care făcuse aşa ceva. Ţara asta nu avusese niciodată parte de cine ştie ce vremuri de pace de care să fi ştiut eu sau oricum nu prea multă vreme. De-atunci încoace am citit ceva despre istoria ei şi nu cred să fi avut vreodată aşa ceva. Dar bărbatul ăla s-a pus pe treabă cu un ciocan şi o dalta şi a cioplit o copaie din piatră pentru apa care să ţină zece mii de ani. De ce-a făcut-o? În ce credea el? Nu în faptul că nimic n-o să se schimbe.

Adică lucrul care ţi-ar trece întâi prin cap, bănuiesc eu. Trebuia să fie mai deştept de-atîta. M-am gândit multă vreme la asta. M-am gândit la el şi după ce-am plecat de-acolo şi casă s-a făcut fărâme. Trebe să spun că şi-acuma copaia de apă e tot acolo. N-ar fi deloc uşor s-o urneşti din loc, ascultă-mă ce-ţi spun. Aşa că m-am gândit la el cum stătea acolo cu ciocanul şi dalta lui nu ştiu poate numai câte o oră sau două după cină. Şi trebe să zic că singurul lucru la care mă pot gândi e că în sufletul lui a existat un soi de legământ. Doar că eu n-am deloc intenţia să cioplesc o copaie de apă din piatră. Dar mi-ar plăcea să fiu şi eu în stare să fac un aşa legământ. Cred că e lucrul care mi-l doresc cel mai tare.”

Şi după No country for old men s-a făcut film, ca şi după The Road (Drumul) despre care am scris aici. Patru Oscar-uri. Foarte bun, dar trebuie citită cartea, altfel e greu de înţeles cum trebuie. Cine pricepe din film că personajul central este şeriful Tom Ed Bell şi nu Moss sau Chirugh? E greu.

Lumea care vede filmul crede că e un western. Dar nu e. E despre noi.

Singurul care pare afectat de excesul de radiaţie ultravioletă din aceste zile e premierul Boc: cică PD-L o să câştige alegerile în 2012.

“In the middle of some sort of wasteland stands an imposing, featureless building that rises forever into the sky. The building holds a nightly attraction, a freak show that draws crowds from all over the region on a nightly basis. One creature comes every night but not just to marvel at the grotesque freaks but rather to watch Jojo, an enchantingly beautiful creature that rides the high wire. However his longing does not go unnoticed – not a problem when it comes to the lonely Jojo but more an issue for the jealous and spiteful owner.

From the very start of this film I was taken by the sheer beauty and yet pure Gothic horror of the animation. Others reviewers have commented on how it looks unoriginal and perhaps even copied from somewhere else but such things are a nonsense – this creation has taken some imagination (inspired or otherwise) and it looks fantastic throughout the entire short. The use of lighting or, more importantly, darkness is great and the atmosphere is superbly presented. With almost no dialogue, it is not just the wider animation that the director gets right, it is the characterisation which also works a lot better than you think it should and I was surprised by how much I was into it and how affected I was by what is ultimately a very dark and bittersweet tale.

The use of music is well selected as well – setting an emotional scene without making it feel like the music is falsely drawing the emotions from you. It is a hard thing to describe and I’m sure the success and good reviews have meant that some have come away feeling disappointed with it but for me I was taken from the opening frames and was engaged and touched by its dark beauty right to the very end. Well worth seeing – ideally on the big screen like I was fortunate enough to have been able to.” (IMDB)

Photography records the gamut of feelings written on the human face – the beauty of the earth and skies that man has inherited; and the wealth and confusion that man has created. It is a major force in explaining man to man.
